Strawberry Horchata Recipe for Valentine’s Day

Have you ever had Salvadoran horchata? It’s delicious! It’s nutty, earthy, and totally dairy-free! Toda,y I want to share a twist on classic Salvadoran horchata. So, I will share how to make strawberry horchata! Big Eats LA inspired this recipe. In other words, this is my own take on his recipe. This strawberry horchata recipe is tasty and perfect to make for your sweetheart. As a result, I simply had to share it with you all here on the blog. I am so excited to share this recipe with you all. So, let’s get to it!

What is the difference between Mexican and Salvadoran horchata?

Mexican horchata is made with rice, cinnamon and milk. On the other hand, Salvadoran horchata is typically made with morro seeds and other seeds, such as sesame and even squash. Salvadoran horchata is typically dairy free, and therefore Vegan.

This horchata recipe contains rice and morro seeds.  Therefore, I refer to this horchata as my SalviMex take on horchata.  That is because I use both rice and morro seeds for this recipe.

Vegan Friendly

Additionally, I personally make my horchata with nondairy milk. So, this is a vegan-friendly recipe!  Further, I believe almond milk adds a nutty flavor that makes this horchata recipe even tastier!

Natural Sweetness and Color

Finally, the strawberry adds sweetness and makes it a gorgeous pink color, perfect for Valentine’s Day, or any other romantic occasion.

Are you going to make this for your special someone? I know I will certainly be making this for my husband, along with a plate of heart shaped tacos!

How to Make Strawberry Horchata Recipe

To make this particular recipe, you will need 1 cup strawberries, 1 cup rice, 1 cup morro seeds, 1 cinnamon stick, water, almond milk, and sugar to taste. The sugar is optional, as the strawberries add enough sweetness.

You will start firstly by rinsing the rice and morro seeds. Be sure to dry them well. Secondly, in a pot, on medium heat, toast the rice. Stir often. Then, add the cinnamon stick to toast it as well. Be sure to break up the cinnamon stick. Now, add the morro seeds. Continue to stir. Your kitchen should be smelling amazing at this point!

Once the rice has a beautiful golden color, you are done with this step. Cover the toasted ingredients with water. Let them soak overnight. The next day, add the ingredients (including the water) to a blender. Blend until smooth.

Strain the mixture in a cheesecloth. Add the horchata base mixture and strawberries to a blender. Blend well. Strain it yet again. Pour it into a pitcher with almond milk and option sugar. Stir well.

Put it in the fridge until its cool. This may take about an hour. Now, you are finally ready to enjoy!
