In my home, you will almost always find cooked beans in the fridge. This is because they are a great addition to any meal. For example, I can mash them and enjoy them with fried plantains, a hand-made tortilla, and some cheese. Now, you have a classic Salvadoran breakfast. Additionally,  I can mix whole, cooked beans with cooked rice. Now, I have casamiento, a delicious side dish that works for lunch for dinner. Finally, if I want a meatless meal, I will mix beans, rice, lettuce, and pico de gallo in a bowl for a satisfying meal. As you can see, beans are very versatile. Therefore, today, I will show you how to make black beans from scratch!

How to make black beans from scratch

To make this meal, you will need:

  • 2 cups black beans
  • 8 cups water, plus more as needed
  • 1 tablespoon Knorr chicken-flavored seasoning
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1/4 onion

Once you gather your ingredients, this is how you put them together. Firstly, sort through the black beans, removing any “ugly” ones. Secondly, rinse the black beans. Next, soak the black beans in water for 30 minutes. As you soak the beans, put a pot of water to boil. Once the water boils, add garlic and onion. Next, add the beans. Cook until beans are soft, about 2 hours.

Señora Advice: Add more water to the pot of beans, as needed, if the beans start to get dry.
