Pickled red onions are an easy and delicious way to lien up any dish. They add a burst of color and a tangy flavor. As a matter of fact, I have pickled red onions in my fridge almost always. Today, I will share an easy pickled onions recipe that you can quickly make at home.

I was organizing my fridge the other day. Then, I saw that some of my onions were about to go bad.  Consequently, I salvaged them by pickling them. As a result, I was left with delicious homemade pickled onions!

You can enjoy these pickled red onions on enfrijoladas. They also go great with tacos. You can even enjoy them at breakfast time with huevos rancheros.

How to Make Easy Pickled Onions Recipe

To make pickled red onions at home, you will need 2 red onions, boiling hot water, lime juice, a bit of orange juice and salt.

Firstly, you start by boiling water. Secondly, as the water boils, peel the onions. Then, thinly slice the onions. From there, put the sliced onions into a heat-safe bowl. After that, pour boiling hot water over the onions, ensuring that you completely cover them. Allow the onions to soak in the water until soft. This can take about 90 seconds. Next, carefully strain the hot water from the onions. After that, add the onions to your glass jar. Cover them with lime juice, orange juice and salt to taste. Seal tightly, and give it a shake!

If you like heat, you can add habanero slices to this, and it tastes amazing!

These onions will keep in your fridge for about a week.

  • Heat safe bowl
  • Strainer
  • Mason jar with lid


  • 2 red onions
  • Lime juice one cup
  • Orange juice a splash
  • Salt to taste
  • Boiling hot water


  • Boil water.
  • As the water boils, peel onions.
  • Then, cut the onions into thin strips.
  • Next, place sliced onions into a heat-safe bowl.
  • Pour boiling water over the onions, ensuring to cover the onions.
  • Allow the onions to soak in the hot water until soft, about 90 seconds.
  • Carefully strain the onions.
  • Cover the onions with lime juice and orange juice.
  • Add salt and stir.
  • Enjoy in tacos, on top of tortillas, or however you would like!
